Day 56-- Back in Michigan on a beatiful drive tru 'da U.P.

After  a detour around the usual route out of Duluth to Superior WI, and a stop for traffic on a bridge building in Wisconsin, the route across US 2 and M 28 (MI) was smooth. There was a strong NE headwnd about 1/2 of the 366 miles, but it was a beautiful drive.

The Lake Superior shoreline appeared many times as we drove along side  and through the towns and cities of the UP. "U.P." is the endearing term used to speak of the Upper peninsula of Michigan. The locals call themselves (among other things ) "The YOOPERS", pronounced as you see it.

IT was impressive to see the activity on the Mother's Day especially at the restaurants along the way. Many of the parking lots were filled and people were coming in and going out at 2:00 PM yet.

The hills start to come in before Marquette and around Munising. The latter is very busy in the summer with the Pictured Rocks so close which attracs many visitors who want to see that beautiful part of Lake Superior shoreline. The waves were severe, as a stiff NE wind blew most of the early part of the day. As we got past Munsing the winds died down to almost nothing.

Tomorrow we head for Seney NWR a few miles up the road. There will aslo be laundry and some grocery shopping I believe.
The Old City Hall in Askand WI, was their Central
High School

The waves along lake Superior showed the NE wind .

The detour ended here as we returned to US 2

The beautful forested drive on M 28 all across the upper peninsula.

We followed these routes to Germfask, MI.

Name this town and win your self a candy cane!

Our campsite and bird feeders waiting for the birds to come.
We are surrounded by mosty cedar trees and tall White pine.
