Day 23, April 25, 2016 Moved from Matamuskeeet Lake,NC, to Mackay Island, NC (Sandy Point RV)

Most of the day was traveling , including making the correct turns (not easy when the streets are unmarked ). In Elizabeth City NC, we ran by two main streets that had no names so had to guess and did a backtrack of sorts. (Yes, Jim and Ruth are still “map” people.) Personally, i think maps help to keep the brain functioning rather than listening to a robot give directions.

The route today was generally north 30 miles, west 15 miles, north 20 miles, east and northeast  40 miles. This took place on 11 different roads.  The terrain was mixed farming, many seed farms, timber, much tourism and services. In spite of the travel ,the frequent stops allows us to add to the bird list. We did get 30 birds today in spite of not “looking” for them. The Osprey were quite regular and seeing a Brown Thrasher gathering nesting material right by the trailer added to the day. The poor hummers were very frustrated when I took down the feeders when we left this morning.

Green Beans are a large crop grown in Eastern NC
They are coming along nicely already.

Tilling the soil in preparation for planting was seen today again.
Looks like a "disc"at work.  Any comments?

The farmer is spraying some chemical on the soil rior
to planting, I believe.

The Ferry Docks at Currituck NC  We are just leaving.

A few of the "up to date" homes (These are not your Grandmas cottage)
on the Sound as we begin our Ferry ride.

Our place on the Ferry.T  It was free at this particular Ferry.

Tonights sunset  on Barley's Bay , Mackay Island.

In case you missed the other sunset photo tonight!

As we approached the Ferry, in Currituck,  Ruth told me to pull over to the side of the road as she was getting sick to her stomach. So, although we were just one block from the Ferry Dock, we stopped to get her taken care of before we proceeded. It was a church parking lot where we stopped, and for the life of me I cannot remember the name of the church. ( I did just research the church and t was the Pilmoor United Methodist Church.) Thanks guys, for the use of your drive.

I ate lunch in the truck waiting for the Ferry to return for the 1:00 ride. The Ferry ride was uneventful , and few birds were seen. I did meet a very amiable young man on the Ferry Dock , however, who as a junior is finishing school (being graduated), and he skate boards the six miles from his home on Knott’s Island to school each day. (That includes the Ferry ride of five miles.) He has already been to world sites of skiing, and sno boarding and wants to get into engineering school in two years. (One year of work first) . He told me much about the area. On the Ferry I tried to convince a lady (home on Virginia Beach,) that she should be persistent with enticing the Hummers to come to her feeder. She thought she would try again.

We did set up the trailer in a very sandy campground (Sandy Point) UGH!, and went to the laundry near right away to do the emergency laundry that was needed. I cooked some scrambled eggs for Ruth and  we stopped and got a fresh Pastrami sub and finished the laundry at the same pot. After dinner we had a beautiful sunset.

So that was  the first day on Knott’s Island with more to come in the next three days. We are on the Virginia Border , and I mean the border as it (Virginia) is on one side the entry road to the campground. We are camped JUST inside the NC state line.  See ya tomorrow.
