Trip Day 21, Friday  May 14, 2021 Moving to Martinsville VA

Today was the move from Eastern shore VA (Fredericksburg) area to southern VA (Martinsville). Just north of the Tennessee border.

The immediate noticeable change is the closeness of the highway to the campground (less than one block) although the highway  is up an embankment so the sound  ‘floats away’ so to speak.

We let the GPS do the work today and that seemed to be a successful approach. “She” did not make an error even when we turned around, she was “right on the money”, with the directions.

We have now named her “Margaret” in honor of Ruth’s sister who kept after us until we succumbed to using the GPS . A lifetime of maps and change finally comes our way. Thanks “Mar”.  (Yes, we know there is another Margaret.)

After getting one tank filled with propane at the KOA, we headed out at 9:07 AM. Following the route by the GPS , we asked for the shortest route (gasoline shortage and all) which placed a few backroads (no highway numbers) , on the list. Just names like “Piney Ridge” and  “Chatham Rd.” Truly out in the country and quiet with little traffic. The trailer held up well.

The other roads had route numbers and it was good to have some one calling the turns and stops. Like;  Guinea Lane, US 1, Jefferson Davis Hwy. (again), 208, 522, 22, I-64, US 29, (those two back roads,) 58, US 220, and a number of streets in Martinsville last one of which was Greensboro  Rd. Our street is Tensbury Drive. The Indian Heritage RV Park.  Interesting name. I’ll have to ask a few questions on that title.

But it was  a good ride with two stops for gas, The first gas was a ”topping” only 40 miles down the road where Ruth spotted  a “Sheets” station that was just like normal, No lines and the station had gasoline. I put in 5 gallons there, and about 2/3 of the way to Martinsville I stopped at a small “two pump” station that was open. A quiet lady ran the store ,and after I filled up I thanked her for the gasoline as the price was 20 cents below the average here.—-$2.79/ gallon!!!

We arrived at about 3:30 and even though  the route was 215 miles, it was two lane much of the way. Hence an average speed of about 37 mph.

As we pulled into the park by the office we notice many fast food places were within a block. Pizza Hut, KFC, etc.  So we settled for a Pizza the first night as we had not eaten out much and preparing dinner after the ride can be tiresome.

Martinsville is quite hilly and there are more “mountains “around than I would have imagined. Here too, the roads are very hilly and there are many curves. There is a well known Auto Speedway here. The Roanoke River flows down from the Blue Ridge and ends up in the Kerr Reservoir in VA.

Internet here… we are in the back of the campground ….is non existent during the day . I will do my down and uploading  in the late evening and early morning, when fewer are using it.

Tomorrow is Saturday and  we may just do some sites nearer to stay away from the “Maddening crowd”.
