Day 109, Friday July 20, 2018, Duluth and Canal Park Penisula.

Yesterday we traveled "Moccasin Mike's Road" and saw the Wisconsin side of the huge sand bar that is separated by the St Louis River and the canals that allow ships to move in and out of Duluth (MN) and Superior (WI). Today we crossed over the river and the US 53 Bridge and drove the north side or the Minnesota side . This include the  huge downtown revitalized center called Canal Park and many homes as well as  Point Park, and an airport. The airport also has a seaplane base for tourist to see the beautiful harbor from the air. We saved the walk around the Canal Park for last.

From Canal Park Duluth looms on the hills. Great Superior view.

Walk to the Superior Beach

Beach walk and Superior in view.

Is it carrying grain? Ore?

Seaplane giving views of the bays.

Each year in August there is a "Dragon Boat " race. Here are two 'shells' at a Rowing club.
Driving down Minnesota Avenue are homes on both sides with water on the front doors of both sides  .The Aluoez Bay is on the west side and Lake Superior on the east side. As we drove further from Duluth there were patches of open spots where access to Lake Superior was possible. At the end of the road was the airport, where good birding may have been possible at one time, but the road adjoining it was closed. We had to contend ourselves with a few songbirds and many gulls. The CANADIAN GEESE were  all over the bay.

We slowly returned to Canal Park and stayed awhile with the crowds with a  walk into the Corp of Engineers huge Museum.  Ate lunch on a park bench and called it a day. Tomorrow we will head for the Ski Mountain where birding in the woods should be better.
