Definitely a Rodeo part of the country
In the morning it was laundry time. Gotta keep the clothes neat and clean. Fortunately this RV Park (recently under new management , and it is a good thing) has a small laundry facility, and we used three of the four washers and were out of there in about 1 1/2 hours. This one costs $2.00 per washer load. Drying is about the same as most places ...,25 cents per 15 minutes.
Ruth wanted to fine a retaurant that served breakfast all day, so we did find one and after the laundry (it was almost noon) we headed for Ranchers Restaurant. It is were ALL the county comes to eat. There were ranchers. linesmen, ranchers, farmers, travelers, truck drivers, and all sorts of folks having a meal. The lunch buffett which include both the salad bar (excellent) and a hot buffet with six choices and two soups for $9.95. It was worth the price. Ruth got her eggs and biscuits and gravy and I got the buffett.
After lunch it was to attempt to find a few birds even though the wind was stil a large factor, We headed into town and behind the Lamar CommunityCollege, there is a large woods along what woud normally be a tributary of the Arkansas River that flows nearby. It is dry, but we were abe to locate a few birds there among them the Kestral and Robin. (Seeing lots of them) . Then another spot was the city Cemetery on the North end of town. Nothing moving there except the Grackles and starlings. We were about to explore another area when Ruth spotted a large horse corral with many young colts and she stopped at the fence to take pictures. A woman's voice came through the air and asked us if we would like to come into the yard to get better pictures. Ruth was delighted. So we did and spent 45 minutes with the young colts and their Moms as well as with the goats in the yard. It seems that the woman runs a vets clinic there and keeps the colts as a business.
That pretty much ended the "birding" for the day. So there was one more stop to get groceries and we did find a "Safeway" (We usually scope out these paces beforehand) and got what we need and headed to the trailer. It is so easy to find places using the internet. In the evening I did spot a new bird on a walk around the park. It was a Black Throated Sparrow. We had seen them some years ago in AZ but not since.
It s much cooler today at 55 F high and should reach close to freezing tonight. It is 38 F as I write this blog. (Keep the water dripping!) Tomorrow we head out to the east of Lamar and a WMA as well as a small town that has potential.
What is it, or what are they?
Today's bird, the Wood Duck.
